Banks encouraged to become Blue Zone Worksites

BlueZonesProjectLogoIn August 2011, Governor Branstad announced Iowa’s goal to become the healthiest state in the nation by 2016.  Improving well-being is critical to the economic viability of our state, and a healthier population will allow Iowa to redirect billions of dollars towards economic development.

The Blue Zones Project™ is a vital part of reaching the goal.  Brought to Iowa through an innovative sponsorship by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, in collaboration with Healthways and Blue Zones®, Blue Zones Project is designed to make healthy choices easier through permanent changes to environment, policy, and social networks.

Every worksite in Iowa can work towards becoming a Blue Zones Worksite™.  Signing up is free, action items are flexible, and most of the options have little to no cost for employers beyond the initial time necessary to set them up.

Thriving employees are vital to your bottom line.  When your employees have high well-being, they miss less work, get more accomplished and have lower healthcare costs.  Pursuing Blue Zones Worksite designation not only demonstrates your commitment to making your company a healthier place to work, but also has tangible benefits including:

  • Improved employee health through risk reduction
  • Improved employee engagement
  • Improved productivity and reduced absenteeism
  • Reduced turn-over

Getting started is easy.  All the tools you will need for this well-being journey can be found at  Simply hover over the “Community” tab at the top of the page, and click “Involve My Organization.”  If you need help along the way, just email

Whether you choose to pursue official designation, elect to adopt some of the Blue Zones principles a la carte, or simply strengthen your existing worksite well-being efforts, this is a free program that will help you create a work atmosphere that inspires, encourages, and promotes well-being.
